10 fun facts about Thanksgiving you didn’t know:

 

  1. First Thanksgiving day was celebrated in 1621.
  2. Turkey was not among the first Thanksgiving foods.
  3. The first Thanksgiving took 3 days.
  4. Colchester, Connecticut (1705) was the first city that canceled Thanksgiving and postponed it to the next week. Back then, the Connecticut River was frozen due to the cold weather, therefore, they couldn’t get the needed sugar; and no sugar meant no pie, and what is a Thanksgiving without a pie?
  5. The oldest parade was in Philadelphia (1920) and it then inspired Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  6. There was no Balloon in the very first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, instead they used actual animals, borrowed from Central Park Zoo.
  7. Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd US president, refused to declare Thanksgiving a holiday.
  8. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd US president, wanted to move Thanksgiving to one week before the actual date in 1939 so that there would be more time for shopping, and we all know more shopping means a better economy; but many people didn’t accept it and in 1942 Thanksgiving was once again back in its own date.
  9. Each year, 46 M Turkeies are being prepared for Thanksgiving in the US.
  10. Each year, in the US, 50 M pies are cooked for Thanksgiving.
