How to write a formal letter?

Are you planning on continuing your education in the US? If yes, then you better start learning how to write a formal letter because trust me, it will come in handy. You might need to write a letter/ an email to your professor or some other authorities then let’s be prepared.

  1. Heading:

The first part of a letter is its heading. The heading is written in the upper right-hand corner of your letter and you have to write your address and the date in this part.

(some business letters contain an inside address, the address of the receiver, under the first address, in the left part.)

  1. Salutation:

The second part is the greeting; it is written on the left after the address. Salutation most of the time starts with “Dear” (except when you use Gentlemen) and ends with a “Comma”.

  • Dear Mr (last name),
  • Dear Ms (last name),
  • Dear Sir,
  • Dear Sirs,
  • Dear Madam,
  • Dear Sir or Madam,
  • Gentlemen,

If you’re writing a letter to a professor or someone in charge in the university you better not use “Mr”, “Mrs”, instead write their title, like:

  • Dear dean Jackson,
  • Dear Dr. Smith,
  • Dear Professor Bishop,
